Condong Bowling Club Flood Resilience Upgrade
Project Overview
Following the devastating 2022 Northern Rivers floods, Condong Bowling Club undertook a significant flood resilience upgrade to safeguard this vital community facility from future flood events. Having experienced more than six feet of floodwater during the disaster, the club invested in a range of resilience measures designed to protect its infrastructure and ensure it can continue serving the local community.
FloodFree was engaged to supply eight custom-engineered Demountable Flood Barriers (DFB) to protect multiple access points throughout the facility, including sliding door entries, roller door openings and pedestrian doorways.
The Challenge
As a highly valued community hub supporting sporting groups, charities, local organisations and residents, maintaining operational continuity during and after flood events was a key project objective. The club required a reliable flood protection solution that would:
- Protect multiple building access points from flood ingress.
- Accommodate a variety of opening widths and configurations.
- Allow rapid deployment when flood warnings are issued.
- Maintain unrestricted access during normal day-to-day operations.
- Integrate with planned structural upgrades to the building.
The design also required flood barriers to be installed internally behind roller door openings, allowing the barriers to operate without external support restraints while maintaining the building's functionality.
The Solution
FloodFree supplied eight custom-designed aluminium Demountable Flood Barriers (DFB) to help safeguard Condong Bowling Club against future flood events. Each barrier was engineered to provide protection to a design flood level of 1,500mm, with an additional 300mm freeboard, delivering a total barrier height of 1,800mm.
The barriers were installed across a range of building access points, including sliding doors, roller doors and pedestrian entrances, with opening widths ranging from 860mm to 3.3m. All systems were designed as channel-mounted installations, integrating neatly into the building structure while allowing unrestricted access during normal operations.
For the roller door openings, the barriers were positioned internally behind the doors, eliminating the need for external restraint systems and ensuring the flood protection infrastructure remained unobtrusive when not in use.
To support efficient deployment and ongoing asset management, custom wheeled storage racks were supplied, enabling barrier components to be safely stored on-site and quickly transported into position when flood warnings are issued.
Delivered as part of the club's flood resilience upgrade program, the demountable barrier system helps protect this important community asset from future flood events while maintaining unrestricted access during day-to-day operations. The upgrade provides a practical, user-friendly flood protection solution that enhances the long-term resilience of the facility, helping ensure Condong Bowling Club can continue serving local residents, sporting groups and community organisations for years to come.
